Something for the men (but also concerns women)!

Did you know that in the majority of Western countries, the sperm count of men has dropped by 50% (and is rising), in less than 40 years?

Births rates are at an all time low and the ageing population is set to grow. As many as 23 countries will see their population halve by 2100.

While some of this can be attributed to low sperm count, some is due to many women choosing not to have children, or have fewer children and they have easy access to contraception.

I'm not here to discuss the low birthrates. I'm here to tackle the declining sperm count and sperm concentration in men.

This should not come as a surprise as to why this may be.

Think about how we have been living over the past 50 - 60 years. From the food we eat, the products we use in our homes and on ourselves, the air we breathe and what we are exposed to in the environment on a daily basis.

There are thousands of man-made chemicals in our food, the air, products we use and the water we drink.

Our bodies were not designed to deal with the barrage of contaminants that inflict our bodies daily.

Many of us are eating a huge amount of 'food-like' products every single day. Why do I use the term 'food-like'? Because most processed food is not food. It is nothing like the original fruit or vegetable it is supposed to emulate. Most just tear open a pack of crisps or chips without even looking at the ingredients list.

One very good example is Pringles. Here is a typical ingredients list:

- potato flakes, sunflower oil, unmodified potato starch, rice flour, mono - and diglycerides, sugar, salt, dextrose, non fat milk solids, onion powder, whey, MONOSODIUM GLUTAMTATE,

corn starch, sour cream, lactose, partially hydrogenated soybean and cottonseed oil, maltodextrin, soy lecithin, citric acid, natural and artificial flavour, malic acid, cheddar cheese, sodium caseinate, buttermilk solids, corn syrup solids, artificial colour (including Yellow 5 Lake, Blue 1, Red 40), Disodium Inosinate, Disodium Guanylate and Lactic Acid.

This is just one product. Artificial colouring has been associated with dysfunctional behaviour in children, for example. And it is in almost ALL processed foods.

Disodium Inosinate - flavour enhancer, like MSG, can cause migraines.

Disodium Guanylate - same as above and can cause over stimulation of the brain

These are just 2 of the synthetic ingredients and a short explanation of their side effects. So why do companies use them? Its all about money at the end of the day. It doesn't matter what the labels say, "healthier option", "low fat", "low sugar", "low salt", etc, etc.

Everything is about marketing and selling an idea to consumers. Very few people are eating food the way its meant to be eaten. As close to nature intended as possible.

Together with alcohol, smoking, stress, high intake of animal products, high fat consumption, drinking unfiltered or water from plastic bottles, more synthetic chemicals in toiletries, household products, etc, the strain on our bodies is immense.

If you want to have children, and have a low sperm count, you can be proactive in reversing that by eating a more whole food plant based diet, lowering your exposure to environmental toxins in your home and on yourself by opting for chemical free, natural household products and toiletries, sleep more, get a water filter (I recommend Berkey), reduce your alcohol intake and stop smoking (if you smoke), and reduce your stress levels by finding something you enjoy doing (yoga, Pilates, working out, singing, gardening, anything to take your mind off work or other stress factors). Practise gratefulness and being thankful on a daily basis, you will be surprised at how much calmer you will feel once you make a habit of it.

Other major benefits to eating a mainly whole food plant based diet, are that you will feel more energetic, lighter, have a clearer mind and calmer.
